In Burundi, diarheal diseases are the third leading cause of mortality among children below five years and are responsible for 15% of overall child deaths. Evidence shows that 25% of water sources are contaminated with harmful bacteria. Due to recontamination during transportation and storage at household level, up to 75% of households end up consuming contaminated water, even when collected from safe sources. ​​
